I'm working now on a handful of smaller paintings, mostly of the same theme, that I'd like to finish before I leave London at the end of May.

Off Broadway Painting
Last night Meg Cavanaugh and her lovely husband Johnny McCullough hosted an amazing house warming/painting unveiling party at their place here in London. The unveiling happened to be of the 4-foot-wide painting I have been working on for them for a while now. I had sacrificed some sleep to get it done in time, so I'm happy to say it seemed well-received by all in attendance.

New Online Portfolio
For those of you reading this that haven't seen it yet, check out my online portfolio at isaacpalatt.carbonmade.com, if you're curious to see more of my artwork in an easy-to-view presentation.
In other news, I'm almost done with a big new painting, which I'll post photos of when finished, and I'm doing my damndest to get back in bouldering shape. In as much as I'm returning to California in a month, I'd like to be prepared to face my nemesis, Ex-Patriot.

As of last Monday, my undergraduate career is finally over and this Saturday I am moving back out west, where my heart truly lies. I am looking forward to creating in an environment that always seems to awaken and inspire me, and especially to being able to climb more frequently, and on world-class stone.
Here are some photos of my work from the open studios, which Maya's father, Meir, shot during their visit to Pratt last week.

These last three are lithographs.

Senior Show
The opening of my senior thesis show, Vantage, was Monday night. To answer some questions that have been asked: I hung a total of 11 paintings, on 13 canvases (there are two diptychs). Unfortunately, the lighting in these photos of the reception kind of prevents you from seeing all the subtleties of light in most of the paintings. Also, I might as well note here, as the title of the show implies, that the paintings are about point of view. They are about exploring the point of view shot, to document every day life and the world around me through my last year of college, and to examine more the psychological state of transition that the point of view shot is historically used to highlight in cinema (Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for a recent example in film). Of course as both a painter and a rock climber, I am particularly aware of the role that our hands play as the tools with which we connect to the world around us, and so the paintings share them as a common subject; they are ever-present in my point of view. In spite of the torrential rain, a lot of people came to the reception, and it was a ton of fun. The opening was from 6 to 9 and probably 150 or so came through during that time. The gallery is also open every day this week from 11 to 5, so if you are in Brooklyn, swing through. BIG thanks to everyone who helped me with the show, particularly Shane Heinemeier, John Ris, and Suraj Gandhi.

I just got back from a weekend trip down to Washington DC. Jeff Stone, my litho independent study professor, told me to go check out the Whistlers at the Freer Gallery in relation to the new suite of lithographs I'm working on. The lithographs are four different views from my rooftop at four different times of day. Each will progress through three different states and each state will be printed in a neutral grey, created through complimentary colors (they will also be documented in black). Below are the Whistlers I loved most at the Freer, followed by one of the lithographs in its first state, as it appears on the stone, pre-etch.

Also, here is a small oil sketch for a painting i'm working on from the model in my figure study class.

I fly back to Vegas on the 15th. on the 17th I'll be driving Dave to Flagstaff to get his new car and I'll stay in Flag to climb for a couple of days. I still haven't found out for sure whether or not I'm TAing at Idyllwild this summer, but I'd like to. Can't wait to be home and climbing again.
Here is a painting from the beginning of the semester and 4 etchings that I recently finished. I particularly like the first three etchings.

#1

This is my first post, to see if I prefer this blogging format.
My semester is finally over and here is some of my painting work. I don't have any digital images of my prints yet, which are VERY different from these paintings, but I'll get around to that at some point.
